38 Special
The members of 38 Special are originally from Jacksonville, Florida, and they formed the band back in 1974. Their sound? Think southern rock mixed with a little bit of arena rock and a dash of country. You know, the kind of tunes that make you want to jump in a pickup truck and take a road trip down some country lanes.
38 Special was formed by neighborhood friends Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant. You might recognize that Van Zant name, because Donnie’s big bro, Ronnie, was the lead vocalist of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Music runs deep in that family, man!
Anyway, 38 Special started off with a more straight-up southern rock sound, but over time they pivoted to more mainstream rock – think catchy hooks and killer guitar solos. They scored a bunch of hits in the ’80s like “Hold On Loosely” and “Caught Up in You”. These dudes knew how to rock the charts and the arenas!
