“Costa Rica” by Dreamville

The song “Costa Rica” is a posse cut brought to us by the homeys over at Dreamville Records. However, out of the nine vocalists featured only two of them, Bas and J.I.D., are actually Dreamville artists. The rest (King Mez, Buddy, Jace, Reese Laflare, Ski Mask the Slump God, Smokepurpp and Guapdad 4000) actually belong to other labels.

The title of this track is based on the chorus, in which Guapdad boasts that he has “fans” and “big bands” in the country of Costa Rica. He is basically trying to say that his popularity and wealth extend to locales even as far as that remote Central American country. This sentiment is meant to be applied to all of the artists (with Smokepurpp in particular also picking up on the theme). However, it is not indicative of them actually ever visiting Costa Rica. Rather it is meant to allude to the idea that, once again, their popularity and wealth is global, extending outside of the boundaries of their native United States.

And as for the artists’ individual lyrics, they more or less stick to those topics, with the homeys touting their cashflow, adventures with women, lyrical skills and overall badassery.

All in all, this track reads like your average rap song. However, what makes it unique is that the wide array of rappers each brings their own respective viewpoints and flavors to the game. They also resort to some clever wordplay, as in using metaphors in a very-creative fashion. Thus “Costa Rica” represents not only an ambitious effort by Dreamville to bring all of these styles together but also a true interstate rap song.
