The singer seems to be clearing the air after her ex partner claims he never knew the exact reason why she left. He must have thought things were perfect, but Celine states that things were not as they appeared. She explains that her love is not a commodity, then goes on to mention the problems they were facing.

Throughout the song, emphasis is laid on the question of whether he gave her the amount of love she needed. This negligence, she states was the reason for their breakup. Apparently, she felt that her partner was not loving, caring or understanding enough when that was all she needed from him.

She further suggests that though he thought he was doing his best and had good intentions, he didn’t pay much attention to her desires. He did not concern himself with encouraging her when she was down. Neither did he make her feel like she belonged. The worst part of this is that he was not even aware of the damage he had caused, which is why she had to end their relationship.

In all, this song explains how inadequate attention can result in the failure of a relationship.
