“Disco Inferno” by Cyndi Lauper

The inspiration behind “Disco Inferno” was actually a disaster film that was quite popular in its day known as The Towering Inferno (1974). In that movie, there is a scene in which a wild fire engulfs a certain disco located on the summit of a building.

So that would explain the imagery that we are introduced to during the first verse of this song.  But the more general understanding is that the vocalist is not actually referring to a real fire. Rather, she is alluding to the “heat” produced by music in a disco. Simply put she is talking about the strength of the music.

Or more simply put, this is a dance song. And what it centers on is a metaphor of the “disco” being as hot as an actual “inferno”.
