“Don’t Let It Break Your Heart” by Louis Tomlinson

Louis Tomlinson takes a philosophical and advisory tone on “Don’t Let It Break Your Heart”. The premise is apparently him harping on romantic relationships. Or put differently, the general idea is that both he and the addressee(s) are victims of having their hearts broken. But that brings us to the title, “Don’t Let It Break Your Heart”. That is the singer is asserting that we should not let such disappointments emotionally overwhelm us. And he acknowledges that such incidents ‘hurt like hell’. But he also understands that time heals all wounds.

And whereas once again the implication is that he is speaking specifically on the subject of heartbreak via romance, it can also be generally deduced that he is talking about setbacks we experience in life in general.

So conclusively, we can say that Louis is diving into deep waters with this song. He is advising people on how to deal with one of the worst experiences they can ever endure which is “when you love someone”, but they decide to “let you go”. And whereas some may deem he is not qualified to do so based on his profession or age, his heart is definitely in the right place.

And fundamentally the advice he’s giving is spot on. People only have limited control over such situations anyway. But one factor they do theoretically have command over in their disposition. And in that regard, Tomlinson is just saying not to be overtaken by grief caused by a loved one who no longer wants a relationship. Or perhaps another way of looking at it is that it’s illogical for such a person to allow themselves to remain vulnerable to additional (i.e. self-inflicted) pain on top of that which has already been caused by said loved one.
