Eagles’ “Desperado” Lyrics Meaning

Within the general context of this song and indeed popular American culture, a desperado is someone tantamount to lone, rugged cowboy. And the way the titular character is being presented specifically on this track is as someone who is afraid – so to speak – to fall in love. So basically what the band is telling him is that he needs to be more receptive to the idea of accepting a significant other into his life. And this advice is not only due to him “getting no younger”, as in progressively aging. But also isolating himself in such a manner in the name of “freedom” is ultimately working against its intended ideology.

In other words, his “waking through this world all alone” is a form of imprisonment in and of itself.

So whereas there have been other interpretations of the lyrics of this song, the general idea it is speaking to is that the “desperado” needs to become more serious about finding that special someone. And why? Because his own ideology of roughing it alone is not actually conducive to his overall well-being.

Many years ago I heard a sermon using the lyrics as an analogy of clinical depression. Culminating in the words “The sky won’t snow and the sun won’t shine. It’s hard to tell the nighttime from the day. You’re losing all your highs and lows ain’t it funny how the feelin’ goes away!” If you’ve experienced depression yourself for in someone close you understand that concept of no ups and downs just a mundane flat existence.

Yeah, well that’s me.79, and alone. Livin’ on Special K infusions, and beer. No hope, no blessing, no fear…of my friend, Death. No, I’m not suicidal, I’m already dead, and still walking. But maybe someday, one day, the sun might shine again….

The sun may shine again one day. Yes it may, yes it will if you hold onto that hope and begin to move towards it. Every day above ground is a good day. It’s up to you to make something of it. God bless.

Ook jij komt hieruit: time is on your side.
