Drake

Drake is a Canadian-born hip hop and R&B artist. He was born on 24th October 1986 as Aubrey Drake Graham. Drake is a multitalented musician; a rapper, songwriter, singer, actor, an entrepreneur and a record producer. In the early 2000s, he first started as an actor on the teen drama TV series Degrassi. He later forsook acting to pursue a rap career by releasing a mixtape called Room for Improvement in 2007.

As a newcomer in the rap game, he released his debut album in 2010 titled Thank Me Later. The album performed wonders by hitting the top spot (number one) on the US Billboard 200. It later got certified Platinum. Drake then followed his first album with Take Care (2011) and Nothing Was the Same (2013). The Take Care album earned him his first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.

After shooting to prominence in the music scene, Drake has consistently released singles and albums which sold several million copies worldwide. His hard work got him signed to Lil Wayne’s record label Young Money Entertainment. So far, he is regarded as one of the best hip hop artists alive.

Young Drake

Drake is his middle name. His full name is Aubrey Drake Graham and he was born on October 24, 1986, to an African American father, Dennis Graham, and a Jewish Canadian mother, Sandi Graham.

He comes from a musical home, his father was the drummer of American rock and roll legend, Jerry Lee Lewis. His uncle played the bass guitar for American singer, Prince.

At age five, his parents divorced and only his mother raised him afterward. During this time, his mother instilled the Jewish culture and teachings in him. As a result, Drake still regards himself as Jewish.

He attended Vaughan Road Academy, an international high school in Toronto. Drake dropped out of high school to pursue an acting career. His abandoning school was as a result of the numerous abuse and bullying he received at school for being black and Jewish.

Professional Career

Although a talented musician, he first gained fame as an actor. In Degrassi: The Next Generation, a Canadian teen drama series, he starred as the character, Jimmy Brooks. He played the role very well and even won the Young Artist Award for best cast in a TV series in 2002.

He acted in the series from 2001 until 2007 before leaving to pursue a career in music. He released his first official mixtape, Room for Improvement in 2006.

He claims the late American singer, Aaliyah nicknamed the “Queen of Urban Pop”, has had the biggest influence on his music career.

Drake has a huge tattoo of her face drawn on his back alongside his mother, uncle, and grandmother. His love and appreciation for her is very deep. He made a feature on her song, Enough Said, in 2012.

In 2016, He earned a record-breaking 13 American Music Awards nominations in a single year, with his album, Views. In 2017, he broke Adele’s record for the most wins by an artist in one night, at the Billboard Awards.

As of 2021, he is the most awarded artist in the history of the Billboard awards, with 27 awards. He has had eight singles topping the Hot 100 chart and nine albums topping the Billboard 200 chart. He is also the only solo male artist to have over 50 career weeks of ranking number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. With 232 entries on the Hot 100 chart and 45 of the songs ranking in the top 10’s, he is by far one of the best artists in Billboard’s history.

Billboard honored him with the Artist of the Decade Award at their 2021 event, for his enormous contributions to Billboard from 2010 to 2021.

Drake, the Businessman

Aside from music and acting, Drake has done other businesses. He developed his own whiskey brand, Virginia Black, in 2016. The drink sold over 10,000 boxes globally in its first year. He joined the NBA executive committee and became the global ambassador for the Toronto Raptors team in 2013. He owns the naming rights to the team’s practice facility.
