Florence + The Machine’s “The Love” Lyrics Meaning

“The Love” is premised on a couple of different realities. One is, as relayed in the first verse, Florence Welch suffering from writer’s block. Another is how she, as a popular musician, was affected by the recent COVID-19 pandemic – which by the way hit her homeland, the United Kingdom, really hard.

And while we’re on the subject of the UK, said region also has some long-standing traditional celebrations associated with the onset of Spring. And based on imagery associated with “My Love”, such as its cover art, as well as phrases found in the lyrics here and there, it can be ascertained that such beliefs have influenced this song, if not “Dance Fever” as a whole.

So all of that noted, this isn’t necessarily the easiest piece to dissect. But the “love” the vocalist is referring to would obviously be her passion for music. And the reason she does not know “where to put” it would logically be not only due to the aforementioned writer’s block but also, as alluded, being stifled by the pandemic.

So we can take it that this song is very COVID-19 specific, if you will. The associated lockdowns which defined 2020-2021 left a permanent mark on world history. FYI, as of the release date of this song, these lockdowns are still ongoing in some parts of the globe

So even ’til now, getting deep into 2022, musicians are still dropping songs about it, based on their respective reactions and analyses. And it is actually a common sentiment amongst such professionals, as put forth in this song, that the pandemic set them back in one way or another.
