“Goodbyes” by Post Malone (ft. Young Thug)

“Goodbyes” features narratives by Post Malone and Young Thug based on respective romances which they are a part of. The main thing these unions have in common is that they are both troubled. Thus the chorus is centered on Malone in particular saying ‘goodbye’, as in quitting the relationship.

This decision does not mean that the rappers no longer love their shorties. In fact their lyrics would, to some extent, point to the contrary. Indeed Malone attributes his breakup to both he and his girl “acting insane” while simultaneously being “too stubborn to change”. But ultimately he also acknowledges that the two of them are intrinsically incompatible and in fact have kept their romance alive beyond the point of such actually being constructive to do so.

Meanwhile Thugger seems to be a bit more-sympathetic to the overall situation. He does not want to break up as much as he wants to rectify the situation. But he also seems to have more or less accepted that the love is over, though he is reluctant to let go. For instance, a good portion of his verse is dedicated to trying to convince homegirl to let him “cut” her, as in be intimate with her, “one more time”.

So once again this is a song in which the artists are dealing with and, particularly in the case of Post Malone, initiating breakups. And while it may be a stretch to say that their hearts are broken, it is definitely easy to conclude that they are not necessarily pleased with the way things have turned out.
