“It’s Corn” by The Gregory Brothers (ft. Recess Therapy & Tariq, aka the Corn Kid)

The Gregory Brothers’ “It’s Corn”, most simply explained, is an advocacy for eating corn. This is a crop that all of us have at one time or another have partaken of, but, it can be argued, is largely neglected in places like the United States.

That said, corn is pretty much universally liked. It is very tasty, especially, as Americans like to do, when you add butter to the mix. And of course, it’s rich in nutritious value, even reportedly as far as the buttered variety is concerned.

“It’s Corn”

The above facts are what lie at the heart of this song. But the beauty behind the song is that they are relayed by a child named Tariq (backed by The Gregory Brothers vocally), aka the “Corn Kid”, who doesn’t appear as if he can be older than 10.

Now, the interesting part is the fact that Tariq is commenting on the corn crop completely on his own, i.e. not reading from a book or scrip or anything like that. So his expressions come out as sweet and innocent, if you will, as one would imagine.

For instance, he makes statements such as him initially viewing “corn as disgusting”, but once he added butter to the equation, “everything changed”. He also describes the crop itself as “a big lump with knobs” that “has the juice” and advises his interviewer that when things are negative in the world to make things better by taking “the corn break”.

So again, all of this very much reads like an advertisement for corn – so much so that now Tariq is the official “Corn-bassador” of South Dakota (i.e. one of the biggest corn-production states in the nation).

Indeed, it’s hard to imagine that the farming powers that be could have even come up with a better pitch than this one. So without even really intending to do so per se, the Corn Kid, Recess Therapy and The Gregory Brothers have, at least for the time being, made the partaking of corn chic.

The Gregory Brothers

The Gregory Brothers are a social-media based musical group who specializes in comedic content and have proven very successful in their endeavors. As of this writing, their YouTube channel has well over 300,000 subscribers. And to note this is a quartet consisting of siblings Michal, Andrew and Evan Gregory as well as Evan’s wife, Sarah Fullen.

Recess Therapy

Recess Therapy is also an internet-based effort held down by one Julian Shapiro-Barnum, with his specialty being child-related content. As of this writing, his channel has about 130,000 subscribers. And it was he who interviewed Tariq, aka the “Corn Kid”. So as far as this song is concerned, it basically consists of The Gregory Brothers remixing said interview into a song – or songifying it, as some would say.

Who wrote “It’s Corn”?

The credited writers of this song, individually, are the aforementioned Gregory Brothers, Evan, Michael and Andrew. They also produced it as a unit alongside Aaron Beaumont.
