Jason Aldean’s “Rearview Town” Lyrics Meaning

The narrative of Jason Aldean’s “Rearview Town” is based on the singer’s decision to leave the titular “town”, which appears as if it may be the place where he grew up. He has two main reasons for doing so. First is that the place seems to be boring him, as it appears to be in a painfully-predictable, rural setting. Second is that there is a specific woman, i.e. his ex, who is situated there. And apparently being in such close proximity to her only exacerbates his broken heart. So as the title points out, while driving away, this “town” is reduced to an image in Jason’s “rearview” mirror.

Very Symbolic Lyrics

Ultimately this track is more symbolic in nature than literal. And its overall message is one of “putting things behind you” – specifically something that has “held you down” – and instead “looking ahead”.

Incredible lyrics and arrangement and although I’m not normally a fan of country music, this song encapsulates my feelings of two of the most cherished places I’ve ever lived and two of the most cherished women I’ve ever loved. How prophetic and so apropos to reflect on as my life reaches the Autumn of it’s years.

I’m confused. I thought being from a small town meant something, but here the town is too small. I guess he needs something Macon sized, you know the big town where he’s from originally.
