“Headspace” reads more like a breakup song – and a sad one at that. This is not only due to the inherent sadness of a relationship coming to an end. But also Lewis Capaldi himself comes off as being very-meek, to the point where it would appear he has negative self-esteem issues.
For instance, he speaks to the addressee as if he is afraid to upset her. And he is very-apologetic concerning their quote/unquote breakup, insinuating that his presence is bothersome to her. Moreover the title of the song apparently alludes to the idea of the singer expressing a sentiment tantamount to still desiring even a semblance of affection from the addressee, despite the fact that their relationship is apparently coming to an end. Or as Capaldi puts it, he wants her to slip ‘into his headspace’, as in whisper sweet nothings to him in order to ease his romantically-troubled mind. And when considering all of these factors combined, it is easy to conclude that the character the singer portrays is very insecure. .
Indeed the singer seems well aware that the romance he’s in is over, even if he doesn’t admit it forthrightly. In fact by the looks of things it may have ended in the mind of the other party a long time ago. Simply put, we can safely say he’s the victim of unrequited love. And you can’t help but to feel sorry for him considering the way he comes off in this track. Yet despite all of this, he still wants the other person involved to express some kind of loving sentiment towards him, even if it isn’t necessarily genuine.

Capaldi first released “Headspace” on the 17th of May, 2017. Two years after its release, it appeared on his debut album which goes by the name “Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent”. Capaldi’s hit single “Someone You Loved” is also one of the tracks on this album.
