“Love From the Other Side” by Fall Out Boy

“Love From the Other Side” is a pretty-complex love song and one in which the vocalist doesn’t really make much effort in terms of propagating its understandability.

We can confidently conclude that it is in fact a love song, because the title/chorus overtly points to such. We can also presume that Patrick is speaking to that of the romantic variety, since he does reference ‘lovers’ in the chorus.

Outside of those simple observations, what we are met with is a song filled with metaphors and allegories which, to reiterate, are not convincingly explained or expounded upon. But what it seems Fall Out Boy is most generally alluding to is a concept like being in love under less-than-ideal or challenging circumstances. For instance, concerning the title, as featured in the song it reads in full “sending my love from the other side of the apocalypse”.

Furthermore, the first verse especially comes off as if the vocalist has become disillusioned by romance. In other words, before falling in love he thought doing so would be all gravy. But now being experienced in the game, he has come to sadly realize that such is not the case.

The Conclusion

It should be noted that as of this writing, there doesn’t appear to be any official explanation of this song available. So maybe in the future, Fall Out Boy will issue a statement which makes more sense out of the lyrics than we have. But most simply interpreted, underneath all of this painfully-poetic lingo, that what it appears Stump is singing about, i.e. it being harder to rightfully maintain a romantic relationship than it should be, so to speak.

The song could be seen as an ode to the fans who supported the band during their difficult times, and the video support this theory as a tribute to those fans who helped the band endure difficult times when the band struggled. In this interpretation, the lyrics of the song could be seen as a reflection of the band’s gratitude towards their fans who have stuck with them through thick and thin. The line “Sending my love from the other side of the apocalypse” could be interpreted as the band thanking their fans for standing by them even when it seemed like everything was falling apart…and now they are finally on the “other side” of those difficulties. It is a celebration of the bond between the band and their fans, and a recognition of the role that the fans have played in the band’s success.

I think that middle aged couples sometimes reach a point of wondering where they want to go in their relationship as they’re still have life to give into their own careers and dreams and they must be careful not to hold on to something so strongly that it ruins the relationship. They get good at fulfilling their dreams through experience and trials. A workaholic for an example must let go of their love of success before it does them in–stress, no joy, and a hamster wheel to get another employee of the year. Stop and smell the roses, when the couple was in their 20s all was freakn sweet and delightful. Don’t be like the rest who gets divorced or get a heart attack.
