Meaning of “Don’t Blame Me” by Taylor Swift

“Don’t Blame Me” is a love song that utilizes religious terminology and also revolves around a metaphor whereas Swift likens herself to a drug addict, with neither of those latter two styles being amongst her lyrical norms. 

However, Taylor did specify that in this case she wanted to create a track which encapsulates “three things [that] can really change someone”. And what are these three things? You ask. They are:

• drugs
• religion

Furthermore, it has been hypothesized that “Don’t Blame Me” was inspired by Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” (2013), which was one of the biggest hit singles of the 2010s.

But to reiterate, in sentiment this is pretty much a standard love song. It has been reasonably argued that the lyric are based on Swift’s relationship with Joe Alwyn, which was ongoing at the time this track was dropped. 

That is to say that the sentiment expressed is similar to that of “…Ready for It?“, another song found on the “Reputation” album which is said to be about Joe, in that Taylor goes about presenting herself as a playa who has finally found her man. 

Accordingly, the vocalist does possess what may be referred to as a bit of wildness. But as relayed, she is willing to make any type of personal sacrifices necessary to please her current beau.

“Don’t Blame Me”

As for the title, it is meant to point to the notion of Taylor being crazy in love and more specifically asserting that she should not be ‘blamed’ for such a disposition. Or as argued, when love is ‘done right’, it results in a craziness for and addiction to one’s partner. 

So from a certain perspective, this track does imply that being head over heels may be a cause for alarm. But since the vocalist is, let’s say finally truly smitten, she’s reveling in the addressee having such an influence over her.
