Meaning of “HAHA” by Lil Darkie

There’s a lot going on in Lil Darkie’s “HAHA” as far as the verses go. The artist is, it would appear, part comedic in nature. And whereas the lyrical styling reflects that reality, the underlying subject matter, i.e. the thesis sentiment, can be deemed a serious one. And that would be the likes of celebrities being compelled to always put on a smiling face in the name of entertaining others.

The song’s theme is quite similar to Tones and I’s 2019 hit song titled “Dance Monkey“.

You may have never heard of Lil Darkie. And whereas he isn’t an A-lister or anything, he is a social-media based musician with a notable following, such as boasting nearly 500,000 followers on Instagram, an account which does show his face a lot (unlike on YouTube).

He’s also apparently gone on international tours and what have you. So he knows how it feels like to be famous. And as implied, being so is such that the celebrity’s true feelings aren’t taken into consideration.

More importantly, in the minds of others, is his ability to entertain or make them happy, even if he harms himself in the process.

Or perhaps what Darkie is trying to get at, since he references the late Robin Williams in the process, is that being famous can be so lonely, despite the multitude the fans, that the celebrity can even be suicidally depressed without his followers realizing it.

Or either way, the vocalist doesn’t paint a pretty picture of the personal sacrifices it takes to keep others entertained, if the lyrics, all things considered, actually are that deep and comprehensive to begin with.

“Look at me, I put a face on, wow
Look at me, I put a show on when I go
“HA HA HA HA HA HA HA”
Laugh at the clown and his makeup
How does he feel when we wake up?
I don’t know and I don’t care
I’m unaware of how he faring
Glaring, staring at him so intently
At the fair inside the tent”
