According to Carpenter, the song is actually about an actual legal dispute she had with her former managers, Elliot Lurie and Stan Rogow. Carpenter revealed this during her appearance on Live! with Kelly and Ryan.

In 2017, after being fired by Carpenter, a furious Rogow and Lurie took Carpenter along with her new manager to court for what they referred to as a “breach of contract”. According to both men, after they were fired, they were not paid certain monies from the profits from two of Carpenter’s albums. The albums in question are Eyes Wide Open and Evolution. They therefore took the case to court seeking “damages” as well as “restitution”.

So in the song “Sue Me”, a confident and happy Carpenter decides to enjoy her life after the drama arising from her departure from her former managers.
