Meaning of “Vossi Bop” by Stormzy

This song is dedicated to a viral dance craze that originated on Twitter also called the “Vossi Bop”.  However, the lyrics themselves are not based on getting the listener to dance. Rather they are basically centered on Stormzy bragging about his lifestyle, specifically in terms of appealing to women. In fact he boasts that he “could probably take your chick” and is “rubbing shoulders with your girl”. 

Secondly he gives references to his success overall, such as proclaiming himself as “the GOAT” (greatest of all-time). Other topics that he delves into are his dealings with opps and his international travel.

It is clear that Stormzy has skills. But he is not necessarily pushing the boundaries of hip-hop by presenting a song which again is named after a dance yet deals primarily with the usual rap-music themes centered on the artist bigging up himself.

• Stormzy disses “the government” and particularly British politician Boris Johnson, hard, on both the lyrics and music video of this track.
• This is the first song Stormzy dropped since his highly-acclaimed 2017 debut album, Gang Signs & Prayers.
• The Vossi Bop originated from an old Twitter user named @NL_Vossi in 2015. Stormzy derived inspiration and actually created this song a few years back after interacting personally with Vossi via the internet.
• Stormzy namedrops superstar actor and fellow Briton Idris Elba on this track, and in response Idris actually made a cameo appearance on the “Vossi Bop” music video!
• “Vossi Bop” was written exclusively by Stormzy and produced by Chris Andoh.
• The track was officially released on 26 April 2019 by Atlantic Records.
