“Neon Guts” by Lil Uzi Vert (ft. Pharrell Williams)

For starters, the titular metaphor is meant to point to the concept that vocalists at hand have “a colorful aura”. Or put into more frank colloquial terms, the vocalists are saying they shine. That’s basically another way of saying that they are exceptional human beings.

And of course in the world of hip-hop, being able to tout yourself as extraordinary ultimately boils down to how much dough you hold. And based on the lyrics it is revealed that the vocalists do indeed have a lot. But even beyond that, Pharrell and Lil Uzi go on to present themselves as ‘aliens’, i.e. beings who are on a higher astronomical plane, if you will, than the average man.

So the lyrics revolve around those two motifs, i.e. the artist’s wealth and the notion that they’re from outer space or what have you. In fact although he isn’t actually referenced in this song, let’s not forget that E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial also had “neon guts”.

And whereas Pharrell is known for his own usage of colorful lyricism, at the end of the day we have to believe that the alien side of things was perhaps mostly inspired by Lil Uzi Vert’s artistry.

Release Date of “Neon Guts”

Apparently “Neon Guts” was released on 25 August 2017 as part of Uzi’s album “Luv Is Rage 2”.

Generation Now and Atlantic Records did not release “Neon Guts” as a single. However, it ended up being super popular. The popularity of the track was buttressed by the fact that in late 2021 it went viral on TikTok via what is known as the Neon Guts Dance Challenge.

Uzi and Williams Collaboration History

The song is the first time Uzi Vert collaborated with the more tenured hip-hop musician Pharrell Williams. However around that time they did apparently work on a number of songs together. Uzi vocally backed a number of Pharrell’s production – including the likes of “Hours Minutes Seconds” and “She’s a Wild Thing”. Both songs have been leaked but as of yet never officially released.

Also they both contributed vocals to Tyler, the Creator’s 2021 track “Juggernaut”. In 2019 Pharrell produced the song “Electricity” by Honest Boyz which Uzi Vert was featured on.

Credits

“Neon Guts” was written exclusively by Vert and Pharrell, with the latter also producing the track.
