Oli Sykes, lead vocalist of Bring Me the Horizon, and his co-star Grimes approach “Nihilist Blues” from the perspective of two people apparently in a relationship. The one thing these characters clearly share in common are thoughts of pessimism. In other words, they’re both nihilists as the title implies. And this song plays out like a tale of the current state of their love.
Sykes states that he has been trying to get away from his deeply-rooted destructive thinking. In fact he knows there is goodness inside of him. However, he has thus far been unsuccessful in his attempts to escape his own mind. He is also asking for help in overcoming these afflictions, but only a “true” person would be able to assist him. Therefore as of right now, he is going through life with no true sense of direction.
Grimes expresses similar sentiments of being pessimistic and feeling disoriented. She also states an apprehension to getting intensely involved with Oli.
Ultimately the song ends on the note of the same perpetual struggle it began with, that of striving for a better life while simultaneously feeling such is unattainable.
