“On The Square” by Mac DeMarco
The phrase “on the square” has different meanings, including one related to freemasonry. However, in this interpretation of Mac DeMarco’s track by the same name, we are going to assume that he is alluding to its most-common usage, which is to be “candidly honest or transparent”, though it can be deciphered in other, occultic ways also.
And taken as such, this track seems to be based on the addressee putting trust in a character referred to as “brother”. He does so apparently in search of a certain type of “life that isn’t there”. And in response, it appears that Mac is asking him to “square it up” once he has “had enough”, as in to admit that this ideological being he was seeking does not actually exist. And in lieu of such, DeMarco is perhaps entreating this individual to take more initiative over the direction of his own life.
Facts about “On the Square”
- The music video for DeMarco’s “On the Square”, which on the surface appears to have nothing to do with the lyrical content of the song, has been called “nightmarish”, “insanely creepy”, “unsettling” and other such adjectives. However, it seems to have had its desired effect of making the song itself more popular.
- Mac’s Record Label released “On the Square” on 7 May 2019.
- It is the third single from DeMarco’s 2019 album, Here Comes the Cowboy. The song “Nobody” was also released as a single from the above-named album.
- Mac DeMarco wrote and produced this track himself.
The video maybe creepy, but it gives a sense that he indeed is in search for something of meaning. It even changes the tone of the actual song itself in my opinion – setting up a feeling of mystery in many ways.
