“Peer Pressure” by James Bay (Ft. Julia Michaels)

“Peer Pressure” is a song in which James Bay, assisted by Julia Michaels, acknowledges the influence exerted over him by his significant other. To put it differently, James touts that he is not the kind of individual who submits to “peer pressure”. However, due to the love he feels for the person he is singing to, he is more than willing to make her the exception.

The foundation of this song is based James’ acknowledgement of man’s common fear of opening ourselves to other people. In other words, we erect personal, emotional safeguards to protect ourselves in intrapersonal relationships. However, James asserts that “when the right person comes along”, such protections are ultimately meaningless, as he or she will penetrate them and ‘find a way through’ to your heart.

Indeed the sentiment expressed throughout this song is one in which Bay and Michaels are very much encouraging the apple of their eye to be bold in initiating love. When this person is not around, thoughts of them permeate the mind throughout the day. However, everything is cool until they show up in the flesh. Then it becomes obvious just how much control this person truly has over the singers’ minds and bodies.
