“Safe Here” by LP

LP has stated that the subject the lyrics of “Safe Here” is primarily themed on is addiction. And that notion really comes through in the second half, where the vocalist depicts herself as someone who lacks the wherewithal to overcome a certain habit.

And that is the idea the title leads us to, i.e. LP ‘feeling safe’ whenever she engages in said habit.

That said, going back to her aforenoted explanation, what it is she’s primarily addicted to is love. And such may be what the more challenging-to-decipher first couple of stanzas point to, i.e. the vocalist’s dependency on friendship to keep her from falling too deep into her own lonely, depressing thoughts.

And also concerning her addiction to love, about midway through LP expresses a view that her loved one(s) should respect this tendency by not making her feel too isolated.

So it seems as we progress deeper into “Churches”, the songs are likewise becoming more complicated. And in this case, the vocalist may feel “safe” occasionally running to her addictions. But at the same time, it is also quite clear that she knows being dependent on these habits, including the affection of others, is not an ideal modus operandi.
