I can’t honestly say that I was the biggest fan of Tina Turner fan. But as someone who grew up in the United States during the 1980s, of course I knew who she was and liked some of her songs. Tina had been industry active since the early 1960s.
But interestingly, it was until the 1980s that she experienced her most-successful decade. And besides for her videos always being spun during that era, I also remember my moms spinning some of her songs quite frequently.
Out of the eight standard Grammy Awards Tina Turner has won, six of them came between 1985 and 1989. In 1984, she dropped what can be considered her best-known album, before or since, which is “What’s Love Got to Do With It“. That project not only featured its title track, which is Tina’s signature hit, but it also has “Better Be Good to Me” on its playlist, both of which won their own Grammy Awards.
Miss Turner followed that effort up with her 1986 LP “Break Every Rule”. And one of the songs from that project, a track titled “Back Where You Started”, also earned itself a Grammy Award.
The Great Tina
Finally, as far as 1980s’ studio albums go, there was 1989’s “Foreign Affair”. This project did not result in any Grammys, but it did top the UK Albums Chart, in addition to thus far having been certified quintuple-platinum across the pond.
It was also during that decade, more specifically in 1985, that we were treated to Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. It’s virtually impossible to talk about peak Tina Turner without mentioning this classic sci-fi film, which she co-starred in alongside Mel Gibson.
And of course she was involved in the movie’s soundtrack, dropping the unforgettable “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)”, which was nominated for a Grammy. Another song she laid down for the soundtrack, “One of the Living”, did actually win a Grammy, in 1986, for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Also to note, the songstress dropped a live album in 1988, “Tina Live in Europe”. And perhaps we can say given her overall popularity at the time, this too resulted in another Best Female Rock Vocal Performance Grammy, in 1989. That would be the penultimate standard Grammy Award that Miss Turner ever won, with the only one that followed it being for her participation on Herbie Hancock’s “River: The Joni Letters”, which took home the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2008.
The aforementioned “What’s Love Got to Do With It” was also eventually granted a Grammy Hall of Fame accolade, as were Ike & Tina Turner’s “River Deep – Mountain High” (1966) and their 1971 rendition of “Proud Mary“.
The Queen
One of Turner’s well-known nicknames is the “Queen of Rock and Roll” – a very high honor even if an informal one – and she did not earn that distinction solely due to the music she dropped during the 1980s. Rather, as noted earlier, she was around for a couple of decades prior to that. But more specifically during the 1960s and 70s, she was married to the infamous Ike Turner (1931-2007) and for the most part served as one half of an act alongside him called Ike & Tina Turner.
Tina the Fighter
As alluded to earlier, this duo also experienced notable success, to the point that they’re considered legendary on the American music scene. In fact, the pair went on to be enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame well after they disbanded. But it was the nature of that breakup which may be why the industry really hasn’t harped on Ike & Tina Turner since.
As generally understood, besides being a cokehead, Ike was physically abusive towards Tina, his cash cow so to speak, throughout their relationship. And even upon the latter ultimately deciding to initiate divorce in 1976, it can be said that by the time all was finalized, Ike got the better part of the deal.
So Tina has gone on to be considered by many people, such as myself, as a model of female resiliency, not only as far as the music industry is concerned but in life in general. That is to say that not only did she manage to keep going strong in the aftermath of dealing with an infamously exploitative and abusive husband/business partner, but her career was even more successful after getting rid of Ike.
Tina bids Farewell to America
Another interesting fact is that Tina expatriated to Switzerland in 1994, eventually renouncing her American citizenship and all. In making that move, she holds the distinction of being one of the most-prominent American expatriates in history.
According to Turner, she did so primarily for professional and romantic/familial reasons, being that her second and final husband is a Swiss musician named Erwin Bach. And she remained true to that cause throughout the decades, ultimately passing away in Switzerland at the age of 83.
There would never be another like Tina Turner
I personally learned about the death of Tina Turner on the day it transpired, 24 May 2023, via an associate mentioning it on Facebook. Upon first reading the post, it felt like one of those situations where a friend was hastily rushing to be the first to report on the death of a famous person.
But then I thought to myself, clicks aside, why wouldn’t she be compelled to immediately report such an event? After all, as noted earlier, this is a musician we practically grew up with, one of the most-successful African-American female soloists of the 1980s. Indeed, when Tina decided to drop her final studio album, “Twenty Four Seven”, in 1999, it wasn’t by force, as in she could have continued releasing new music, as with other enduring 1960s’ musicians, well into the 21st if so desired.
Fortunately for Tina Turner, she did live long enough to receive her flowers. In other words, she received a number of top-notch accolades before passing, such as being enshrined on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1986, receiving a Kennedy Center Honor in 2005, being the recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018, etc.
So of course the music world was saddened, or some may even say shocked when she suddenly passed away. But, at least to me personally, it doesn’t really feel like one of those mourning situations, whereas for instance a famous singer dies before his or her time.
Tina Turner lived a full artistic life, prevailing against a number of personal challenges and ultimately doing things her way, i.e. retiring on her own accord and even relocating outside of the United States while still being very much en vogue, instead of being forced out of the game or carrying on past her prime.
