Eminem’s “Alfred’s Theme” Lyrics Meaning

The title of this song (“Alfred’s Theme”) is a reference to one Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980), the late “Master of Suspense” whose works also inspired the name and theme of Eminem’s “Music to Be Murdered By”.  Moreover the instrumental to Alfred’s Theme relies on the sample of a song dating all the way back to 1870, “Funeral March of a Marionette”. The said song was also the theme song to Hitchcock’s most-famous product, his anthology series “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”.

And whereas Em does accordingly and metaphorically make references to the deadliness of his music, overall this track comes off like your quintessential Eminem freestyle, if you will. For instance, it is quite lengthy, being highlighted by clever metaphors the rapper put together in relation to the usual topics of his lyrical proficiency and durability, alongside references to the coronavirus and of course Alfred Hitchcock. But the most-notable line, as usual, comes via Eminem namedropping a fellow celebrities. And what he points to is an interview Eilish gave in 2019 where she stated she has been “scared of Eminem (her) whole life”. Overall, she appeared not to be too fond of Shady.  And Slim basically uses that occasion on this song to brag about “giving nightmares to Billie Eilish”. And this he further alludes to the motif of the rapper being a frightening character.

Facts about “Alfred’s Theme”

Eminem produced “Alfred’s Theme” himself. And again, the instrumental utilizes “Funeral March of a Marionette” by a French composer named Charles Gounod (1818-1893).

And of course Eminem wrote this song. But he didn’t do it all by himself. He was assisted by his trusty co-writing companion Luis Resto. Furthermore, the aforementioned Charles Gounod also receives writing credit.

“Alfred’s Theme” was released on 18 December 2020. It is actually the third track on Eminem’s 2020 surprise album “Music to Be Murdered By: Side B”. 

The said surprise project also features the popular track “Zeus“.
